Primary Education
Rizal attended an all-boys private school in Biñan, Laguna from 1870 to 1871, where he studied Latin and Spanish under Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz. He also received free lessons in drawing and painting from the artist Juancho, who lived nearby.
Before formal education, Rizal was taught by his mother Teodora Alonso. She taught him early the ability to read and write.

After his mother, he had several private tutors including: Maestro Celestino, Maestro Lucas, and Leon Monroy

Secondary Education
Jose Rizal was a bright student who excelled under Maestro Justiniano. At the maestro's suggestion, Rizal's parents sent him to Manila for further studies. He took an entrance exam at Colegio de San Juan de Letran but was initially rejected due to his lateness and poor health. With the help of Manuel Xerez Burgos, he was eventually admitted to Ateneo Municipal. There, he adopted the surname "Rizal". Rizal excelled academically, earning high grades in all subjects and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree at the age of 15.

Tertiary Education
After finishing his studies at Ateneo, Rizal wanted to pursue a university degree. However, his mother had a premonition that his life would be in danger if he gained too much knowledge. Rizal's father and brother convinced her to allow him to enroll in University of Santo Tomas, where he studied Philosophy and Letters (1877-88) and later shifted to Medicine. Rizal experienced discrimination against Filipinos, including a professor who vowed to fail him. This led Rizal to decide to continue his medical studies in Spain.

Education Abroad
Rizal traveled alone to Madrid, Spain on May 3, 1882, with financial support from Paciano, to pursue medical studies. He enrolled in medicine and philosophy courses at Universidad Central de Madrid and also learned painting, sculpture, French, German, and English. He continued his interest in sports, practicing fencing and shooting. Rizal completed his medical course on June 21, 1884, and received his doctorate in medicine and licentiate in philosophy and letters in 1885, graduating as sobresaliente.
